Things to do on a rainy day in Sussex

If you’re heading to Forest Garden Shovelstrode for your woodland getaway this year, it might be good to have some plans set aside for in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Even during the summertime, Britain has not got the best reputation when it comes to weather, so it is wise to have a backup plan if the rain is falling too hard for you to spend too much time outdoors.

Our cabins and yurts in Sussex are of course completely sheltered, so you’ll experience a comfortable (and dry!) stay whatever the weather, but if you’re hoping to get out and about to do some exploring, here are a few ideas of things to do in Sussex when the rain is pouring.

STANDEN HOUSE AND GARDEN

A great way to shelter from the rain and take in some gorgeous artwork is with a trip to Standen House and Gardens. Decorated with some beautiful William Morris wallpapers and textiles, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about our local history as the house is located just down the road from our forest yurts and cabins.

Should the rain subside during your visit, you must take the opportunity to wander around Standen House’s beautiful gardens!

BLUEBELL RAILWAY

Another way to spend a rainy day is Sussex – on a train! Down the road from our forest cabins, you will arrive at Bluebell Railway, a volunteer-run preserved standard gauge passenger railway.

Whether you’re wandering around the locomotive museum or enjoying a meal on one of the steam train rides, you’re sure to stay nice and dry as you enjoy your woodland getaway in Sussex.

WINGS AVIATION MUSEUM

If you’re a fan of history, WWII, or you’re keen to learn something new, why not take a trip to Wings Aviation Museum, spending time wandering around historical artefacts and memorabilia whilst the rain falls.

This unique museum is brought to life by the sounds and music of the 1940s with visitors being taken back through time. Suitable for all ages, if you’re visiting our forest cabins as a family, you’ll keep everyone entertained even on the rainiest days in Sussex.

GRAVETYE MANOR RESTAURANT

Whether you’ve spent the day sheltering in your cabin or yurt or you’ve braved the weather and are ready for some delicious meal, nearby to our forest holiday site, you’ll find Gravetye Manor Restaurant, just the ticket for elegant and contemporary dining.

This Michelin Star restaurant located in a country house offers a relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful menu full of delicious food and drink, perfect for recharging your batteries after a rainy day in Sussex.
